Amazon is one of the many procurement sources utilized by the State of California. If you are a State purchasing agent and wish to purchase from Amazon, you’ll need to be aware of the State of California’s policy regarding purchasing from third party vendors. This comes into play with Amazon because some of the products available on the Amazon website are sold by vendors through Amazon, not by Amazon. Steer clear of any purchasing confusion by educating yourself about the products for sale on the Amazon website, and how to tell if your purchase is allowed, or prohibited via the Calcard. Purchasing directly from Amazon is authorized, because Amazon owns the items that it is selling. Purchasing from third party vendors through Amazon is prohibited because you’d be making your Calcard payment to Amazon, and Amazon would then pass on the payment to the owner of the goods. This is not allowed, it would be a prohibited purchase method.
Just so you can see the whole process through, familiarize yourself with vendor registration. First, for practice, search the vendor database in Advantage. You’ll see that Amazon is a registered vendor, and there is authorization to purchase directly from Amazon if all aspects of the purchase are approved. (We’re only reviewing the vendor, not all State purchasing methods.)
Second, visit the Amazon website. We’ll provide the link to a popular item, the Polycom conference phone, which is known as a Sound Station.

You can see that there are quite a few Polycom Sound Stations available on Amazon. To determine which of these are owned by Amazon, and therefore available for you to purchase, you’ll need to click on the different links within the search to see which ones are owned by Amazon, and which ones are owned by third party vendors. You’ll be directed to the “Featured Merchants” page, and most merchants display their company logo, so it’s pretty easy to determine the name of the company selling the item. At the time this post was written, only one Polycom conference station was actually being sold by Amazon, the remainder were from third party vendors. So you can see it’s very important to carefully review the ACTUAL vendor vs assuming the Vendor is Amazon.
